How to: Make Chromium/Chrome launch Thunderbird when clicking on mailto links

A mailto link is one that sends an e-mail to somebody. An example is like this.

If you are using Linux Mint and Firefox, when you click on this link, Thunderbird will be launched for you to send the email. However, on Chromium/Chrome, clicking on a mailto link just opens a new tab. In this article, I will show you how to make Chromium/Chrome launch Thunderbird when you click on a mailto link.

Just open the terminal and run the following commands respectively:
 mkdir -p ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto

 gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/command -t string 'thunderbird %s'

 gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/enabled -t bool true

 sudo sed 's/open_generic "${mailto}"/open_gnome "${mailto}"/' -i /usr/bin/xdg-email

From now, whenever you click on a mailto link on Chromium/Chrome, Thunderbird will be launched.
